Areas we can help
Concussion is a brain injury that occurs when the brain is shaken inside the skull, causing changes in the brain’s chemistry and energy supply. Whiplash can occur from a motor vehicle accident resulting in an indirect force, or a concussion might happen as a result of a direct blow to the head.
The Centers for Disease Control estimate that more than 3.8 million concussions occur every year solely through sports. In the past few years, concussion has received a great deal of attention as people in the medical and sports worlds have begun to speak out about the long-term problems associated with this injury. Recent scientific evidence highlights the need for proper care to prevent complications from concussion.
It is important to seek immediate medical care, become educated on how much activity should be limited early on and avoid additional trauma to your head.
Neck pain can limit one’s ability to participate in daily work and household activities. The current research illuminates addressing neck pain with manual therapy and specific exercises tailored towards the individual’s dysfunction.
Research shows that physical therapy offers neck pain relief for the majority of people and reduces the number of patients that utilize medicinal or surgical interventions.
The shoulder is the most complex joint in the body. As a result, there are a multitude of diagnoses for shoulder pain and problems. The following outlines a diagnosis that almost half of the population will struggle with at some point in their lifetime.
Back pain is one of the most debilitating conditions most individuals experience at least once in their lifetime. Back pain limits one’s ability to complete simple tasks around the home or work.
It’s important to know that the majority of back pain can be resolved free of medication or surgical intervention. We specialize in manual therapy and highly skilled treatment techniques tailored to addressing any back dysfunction. Current research shows that incorporating manual therapy with exercise is the most effective approach to the treatment of back pain.
Knee pain is typically caused as a result of injury. Knee pain can restrict movement, affect muscle control in the sore leg, and reduce the strength and endurance of muscles supporting the knee.
Knee injuries can occur as the result of a direct blow or sudden movements that strain the knee beyond its normal range of motion, recreational activities, a fall, or a motor vehicle accident. Knee pain also can be the result of repeated stress and overuse activities that predispose the knee to movement challenges.
Specialized Treatment Techniques
OSTEOPATHIC
MANIPULATIVE THERAPY
Manual physical therapy technique in which a passive movement is applied to a joint with small amplitude and in a quick fashion in efforts to restore mobility, increase muscle function and improve pain.
It’s fairly common to have our joints “Crack” or “pop” since this oftentimes leads to a decrease in pressure or discomfort within that particular joint. This technique is often used to treat neck, back, ankle and shoulder pain.
INSTRUMENT ASSISTED
SOFT TISSUE MOBILIZATION
A medical treatment technique that uses specialized instruments to help treat soft tissue and scar restrictions.
VISCERAL MANIPULATIVE THERAPY
Our bodies need movement to be healthy and the same principle applies to every structure in our body, including the viscera. For an organ to be healthy and have optimal function there needs to be motion.
Tissues lose their normal motion when they become inflamed and the natural healing process involves local disruption of normal tissue fibers and their replacement with relatively inelastic granular tissue.
Many factors can cause tissue inflammation including infections, direct trauma, repetitive movement, diet, environmental toxins and emotional stress
Visceral physical therapy includes an evaluation of motion of the surrounding tissues and organs with the implementation of techniques to treat those areas of altered motion in efforts to restore physiologic motion and improve the function of organs
An integrative approach to evaluation and treatment of a patient requires assessment of the structural relationships between the viscera, and their fascial or ligamentous attachments to the musculoskeletal system. Strains in the connective tissue of the viscera can result from surgical scars, adhesions, illness, posture or injury.
Visceral manual therapy assists functional and structural imbalances throughout the body including:
- musculoskeletal
- vascular
- nervous
- urogenital
- respiratory
- digestive
- lymphatic dysfunction
It evaluates and treats the dynamics of motion and suspension in relation to organs, membranes, fascia and ligaments.
It increases proprioceptive communication within the body, thereby revitalizing a person and relieving symptoms of pain, dysfunction, and poor posture.
DRY NEEDLING
The utilization of a thin needle inserted into the skin to target connective tissue disorders and myofascial trigger points in order to restore healing to the surrounding area.
Many times, various impairments are present within the muscles, tendon and connective tissue that limit an individual’s ability to perform their daily activities well.
Dry Needling can be used to:
- increase tissue extensibility
- decrease pain
- improve general movement patterns.
CUPPING THERAPY
Soft tissue disorders are very common and can be very debilitating for most.
Trigger points (“knots”) are located within our muscles and can become taught and irritable depending on the amount of tension placed on them.
Oftentimes they are present following a movement disorder.
At Abide, we will utilize cupping therapy to impart a decrease in myofascial restriction.
CRANIOSCRAL MANUAL THERAPY
This therapy is derived from Osteopathic manipulative treatments using gentle fascial palpation techniques. It reduces sympathetic arousal by modifying body rhythms and supports the body’s function and capability of self-regulation by relaxing physical and mental structures.
It is a gentle, hands-on approach that releases tensions deep in the body to relieve pain and dysfunction and improve whole-body health and performance. Craniosacral therapy is a preventative health measure used to bolster the body’s resistance to disease. It is effective for helping individuals with a wide range of healthcare challenges:
- Migraine Headaches
- Chronic Neck and Back Pain
- Central Nervous System Disorders
- Concussions and
- Traumatic Brain Injuries
- Scoliosis
- Learning Disabilities
- EDS/POTS
- Long Haulers Covid
- Chronic Fatigue
- Emotional Difficulties
- Stress and Tension-Related Problems
- Fibromyalgia
- Rheumatoid Arthritis
- Neurovascular or Immune Disorders
